How KPA Serves Adult Martial Arts Students

In the United States, martial arts training is often considered a hobby for people in two main groups: children, and people who enjoy martial sports.
Outside of a few exceptions, like taijiquan, the slow-moving Chinese martial art often practiced for exercise and fitness, many adults believe that their chance to train has passed them by if they didn't train as kids or if they're not interested in competitive martial sports like boxing, jiu jitsu, and judo.
Here at Kindred Protective Arts, we believe that it's never too late to train, and we welcome and support all adults with an interest in the martial arts.

There's a long blog post at The Stick Chick Blog with a lot of good advice for adult new (or returning) to martial arts training. You can read that blog post HERE.
We offer training to adults in Presas Arnis, a Filipino Martial Art. "Arnis" is sometimes called escrima or kali. Our curriculum blends two FMA systems: Modern Arnis (created by Remy A. Presas) and Kombatan (created by Ernesto A. Presas). Presas Arnis is our style, our strategy for dealing with violence.
It is our mission to bring Presas Arnis to everyone we possibly can, to provide the best training in this art as possible, and to create an appreciation of Filipino Martial Arts and culture here in Kansas City.
This is what you should know about training at Kindred Protective Arts: what we think is important, what our values are, and what our commitment is to our students.
A SAFE PLACE FOR ALL
You will never be hazed, belittled, or treated with anything other than friendliness and respect.
Don't worry if you're out of shape, not physically coordinated or worried that we'll judge you because you don't walk into our door as a super-skilled martial artist.
We have people from all sorts of backgrounds training with us. People of all ages and ability and martial arts experience, with a variety of cultural, religious, and social backgrounds.
We require KPA student's commitment to treating each other with the same level of respect.

TRAINING THAT FITS YOUR SCHEDULE
Kindred Protective Arts offers more opportunity to train in Arnis than any other FMA organization in Kansas City. A person with an unlimited membership can train up to 7 times a week in our adult classes.
This means that no matter what your schedule, there's a class you'll probably be able to make at KPA.
We also have a Remote Student program, which is a flexible program designed for people with very erratic schedules or people who live within a few hours' travel of Kansas City.
STUDENT SAFETY
We take the safety of our students very seriously.
Our training culture does not allow for misuse, horseplay, pranks, or abuse of martial arts equipment or our training space. While there is some risk to any kind of physical activity, to the best of our ability, we minimize the potential risks by using safe equipment in good repair, and training in a manner that keeps the safety and security of everyone at our facility in mind.
While we certainly encourage all students to push the boundaries of what they believe they can do, we respect each student's judgment and encourage students to take breaks as needed.
SELF DEFENSE vs. MARTIAL ARTS
Martial arts training sometimes involves actions and viewpoints at odds with the reality and the law of self defense.
We commit to our students that wherever possible, we will make them aware of the legal, ethical, and moral issues around the use of violence in self defense. We believe students should be well-informed before an encounter potentially happens.
A CULTURE OF COMMUNICATION
We keep our students informed of all events regarding the school in multiple ways.
We have a monthly newsletter, Signal chats, in-house calendars, events on our web site, and we make announcements in class and via our official KPA social media channels.
Students know what's happening at KPA!
